Raffles Hotel Le Royal Phnom Penh
The Raffles Hotel Le Royal Phnom Penh has got to be just about the best value Luxury Hotel in the world. Dating from 1929 the hotel exudes old world charm. Arriving one has the feel of being to the Manor Born. One is returning to a grand mansion with the staff so attentive. Here is the butler making the final arrangements for the day. On arrival one is welcomed to a comfortable and glamorous sitting room, the reception details are taken care of by the butler and his staff. Just walking the hallways is a treat, brilliant original period tiles and potted palms just so. Guest rooms are large and furnished in period décor, dark wood abounds, fresh flowers and fruit are unobtrusive.
Everything works perfectly and the attention to detail is meticulous. The general facilities are appropriate and perfect. We enjoy a scrumptious high tea and later cocktails in the Elephant Bar. What a wonderful place to partake of the famous Femme Fatale created for the visiting wife of a former US President. The Le Royal restaurant is an amazing period space and the Michelin hatted Chef Steve Van Remoortel cooks up an amazing storm in either Khmer or French, just brilliant and the value for money is outstanding. During our stay we are totally spoiled by the ever attentive but unobtrusive staff who seem to guess our every need. “You are looking tired today Sir, Madam, shall we organize the Spa?” Yes please. Did I say the Limo picked us up from the airport?
We are very sad to leave Raffles and it is hard to say goodbye to the friends who have looked after us. But it is OK we are already plotting to come back for a little longer. Given the value here we might be tempted to stay in the Royal Suite where Barak Obama and his family recently stayed, or how about the Kennedy Suite where the first lady stayed back in the 1960s? All the possibilities are so wonderfully opulent, affordable and alluring.
