The Oyster Inn, Waiheke Island
Finding a simple straightforward place for lunch on Waiheke Island is rather difficult. Food and wine prices are rather astronomical at the “preferred” places, try a tasting glass of local wine for between $29 and $45? So the Oyster Inn was about our 3d or 4th choice and it too looked pretty pricey for basic fare. So we kept it simple here, hard to go wrong with a good round of Bluff oysters – they were OK but proved to be the most expensive of many plates on our 3 week trip of NZ. A snapper plate was tasty and hot but there was not a lot, while fish burgers were just “ordinary”. A local Cable Bay Viognier, advertised at $29 at the wine shop over the road was sold here at $59, which seemed a little excessive in the light that most of the bouquet and flavour seemed to have evaporated before we could get to the second half of the bottle. $70+ for a basic lunch just seemed a little rich for us, but that is Waiheke!
